There’s a lot of industry conferences and showcase events in Australia, can you tell us what AWME’s point of difference is?
AWME is unique in Australia as it is the only industry conference and showcase event that focuses specifically on showcasing Indigenous, roots and world music. The line up of artists this year is amazing and the speaker program is one of our strongest yet so those interested in all forms of roots music should be at AWME 2012.
Are there any new elements to this years program?
This year we have introduced 2 more venues to the program including a Festival Club at The Lounge venue, plus Ding Dong; we also have an Artists in Conversation piece with Seun Kuti and Bunna Laurie; and have introduced a keynote speaker program featuring Michael Chugg and Brian Ritchie.
Who are you excited about seeing this year at AWME?
There are many acts playing that will be amazing I am very excited about seeing Archie Roach perform tracks from the latest album, plus Afrobeat heavyweight Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, reggae legends The Abyssinians, The Medics, Jagermeister Independent Music Award nominated Sue Ray, Reunion Island artist Christine Salem, Ladi 6, Kutcha Edwards, Malian Blues Legend Boubacar Traore, The Bombay Royale and Kingfisha.
In the Roots/World Music scenes of Australia. Who is exciting you at the moment? Who has a big future?
The Medics, Chet Faker, Sue Ray, Saskwatch, The Bombay Royale and Kingfisha are all amazing.
Who are your dream showcase performers? What artists would you like to bring out here more than any others?
I don’t really have a dream line up. There is so much great music out there and we receive so many applications for AWME. So the exciting part is discovering amazing fresh artists and emerging acts.
