Nu-soul is a big deal in Australia right now. It’s evidenced by the fact that artists like Clairy Brown and the Bangin’ Rackettes (long-time AIR favourites), Saskwatch and Electric Empire have graduated from local residencies to making serious waves overseas on radio and at festivals alike. And there’s more artists waiting in the wings.
But when it comes to Australian Soul in the 21st century, The Bamboos tower over their compatriots. They’re signed to Inertia Recordings in Australia but their longest label affiliation has been with the incredible British label TruThoughts. TruThoughts have been arguably the world’s leading new funk, soul and disco label since 1999, true champions of the genre. It’s a testament to the brilliance of The Bamboos that they have been one of TruThought’s flagship artists since their inception.
All of this is a round-about way of saying why we’re excited to see frequent Bamboos collaborator Kylie Auldist release her next album “Still Life” through TruThoughts.
Kylie is undoubtedly the most powerful and sensitive voice in Australian soul. Comparisons to Diana Ross and Sharon Jones are bang-on. The album is co-written and produced by The Bamboos’ Lance Ferguson and displays the same skill and diversity in songwriting that is becoming his trademark.
