Coming out of Albury, fresh on the scene after just over a year of being a band, Pop-Punk band Catnip Kaiser have released their debut self-titled EP.  Catnip Kaiser was created by founding members Jack McDonald and Doug Hibberson as a pop-punk cover band in their hometown Albury, and later developed into an original band with the additions of lead guitarist Josh Quinn and bassist Peter Baker.

The lads have cemented themselves in their hometown as an energetic and exciting live act, finding themselves on the same stage as international touring acts Antagonist A.D and British India.

In 2019, the band released their debut single Why? which broke sales records on their hometown music platform in Albury as well as charting strongly on Triple J Unearthed (Charted #1 on Rock and Punk charts, top 2 on pop, top 20 overall). The boys then backed this single up with the release of Grey, a track where frontman Jack McDonald opens up in-depth about his ongoing battles with depression and anxiety, which again achieved strong success on the Triple J Unearthed charts (#1 on Rock and Punk, top 3 on pop, 9th overall). Jack has stated that Grey really allowed the bands' passionate fan base to start reaching out to him about how the track was helping their battles with mental health and what the track meant to them personally.

To follow their two tracks, the band has now released a 5 track EP with songs exploring Jack's mental struggles further, the crushing heartbreaks that everyone goes through, and a song of hope about being able to take control of your own destiny no matter how much something has beaten you down. The EP also features Melbourne singer-songwriter, Emily Hatton, on the punchy track At All.

Recorded by David Wilson of David Wilson Recording in Wagga Wagga, the EP draws on influence from bands such as Simple Plan, early 5 Seconds of Summer, and pop-punk royalty Blink 182.

There’s no slowing down for Catnip Kaiser any time soon, as work is already underway on EP number two this time working with Ionei Heckenberg, guitarist and vocalist for heavy-hitters Ocean SleeperOne song has already been completed with the band believing that it is the best song they have created that will lead in an exciting direction for the band.
Catnip Kaiser’s second EP will be heavily influenced by fellow Australian pop-punk acts Stand Atlantic and With Confidence, whilst also potentially expanding into Bring Me The Horizon and The Amity Affliction inspired parts. Keep an eye out as the boys prepare for their biggest year yet.
